Avalanche warning for region Svalbard øst Tuesday 03.01.2023

Danger level 4 - High avalanche danger

Published:
Continuous strong wind and snow will lead to an extreme amount of wind transported snow. Avoid all avalanche terrain. Very large naturally triggered avalanches likely.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a large truck or destroy several houses (size 4). Remote triggering is possible.

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Mountain weather

Monday 2. January 2023

20 mm precipitation, up to 40 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Gale from southeast. -11 °C to -9 °C at 1100 m a.s.l.

Tuesday 3. January 2023

8 mm precipitation, up to 30 mm in the most exposed areas. Precipitation as snow. Strong gale from southeast, changing to moderate gale from the southeast during the afternoon. -11 °C to -7 °C at 1100 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment

NB!
